Lead Battery 360°
Public consultation on the Code

Calling all stakeholders from industry, NGOs, academia, and the public – you are invited to provide feedback on the new Lead Battery 360° Code. Your input will be essential in ensuring the Code aligns with international best practices and addresses the evolving needs and expectations of the lead battery value chain stakeholders.

The consultation period will run from 8th October to 6th December 2024. Learn more and participate here.

ABOUT US

A Global Alliance

Lead Battery 360° is a global programme established by four associations representing the lead and lead battery industries – the International Lead Association (ILA), Battery Council International (BCI), the Association of European Automotive and Industrial Battery Manufacturers (EUROBAT) and the Association of Battery Recyclers (ABR) – to unlock the power of lead batteries for a sustainable future. Lead Battery 360° champions best practices in lead mining, lead production, lead battery manufacturing and recycling, and by encouraging responsible practices along the entire battery value chain through supply chain management and product stewardship.

the programme

Participants in our programme commit to a set of Guiding Principles which set the global benchmark for lead and lead battery stewardship and responsible supply chain management. Participants also contribute to Impact Projects to help tackle substandard lead battery recycling, build capacity, and promote continuous improvement worldwide.

THE HEART OF THE PROGRAMME

The Guiding
Principles

1

Support responsible battery manufacturing and recycling by placing environmental health and safety excellence at the heart of our operations.

2

Promote the sound management of lead exposure and emissions by setting continuous improvement targets and sharing best practices.

3

Adopt responsible sourcing policies for lead-containing materials, seek to identify risks in the supply chain, and use our influence to promote best practices for EHS performance in suppliers’ operations.

4

Minimise the environmental impact of our products by encouraging the development of programs that ensure effective collection, transportation and environmentally sound recycling of used lead batteries.

5

Adopt business practices that consider the communities impacted by our operations, respect the human and labour rights of our employees and work against corruption in all its forms.

6

Proactively engage key stakeholders in an open and transparent manner.

7

Partner with key stakeholders and government agencies to share our expertise and promote environmentally sound recycling of lead batteries in low and medium-income countries.

Industry Guidelines

As part of the Lead Battery 360° program we aim to promulgate a better understanding of what constitutes responsible lead battery manufacturing and recycling. Over the years we have developed guidelines and tools to allow stakeholders to get a fundamental understanding of the key principles required to recycle lead batteries in a manner that avoids environmental pollution and adverse health impacts. The guidelines and tools have been shown to be particularly effective in improving practices in regions where informal or basic lead battery recycling facilities are prevalent.

Impact Projects

For more than two decades, we have worked in 40 low and middle-income countries, advising governments, communities and companies on best practice lead battery recycling methods to help improve standards at plants and protect communities.

Our Resources

Through advocacy and engagement, we reinforce the key role of lead in the global economy, demonstrating the importance and value of lead and lead-based products, promoting proportionate legislation and regulation in discussion with policymakers, and building awareness of the essential role of lead batteries in delivering a sustainable future. We also support knowledge-sharing initiatives in low and middle-income countries to help raise standards for battery recycling and eliminate harmful environmental and safety practices in those countries.
